New research suggests that the female hormone estrogen provides women’s immune systems a boost in fighting off infection. Estrogen appears to counter an enzyme that blocks the inflammatory process. The study was conducted by The McGill University and appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.The researchers primarily focused on the enzyme called Caspase-12, which has the reputation of throwing the brakes on the inflammatory process. This is the body’s first line of defense against bacteria and viruses. The human Caspase-12 gene was tested by being implanted in a group of male and female mice. It worked on mice that lacked the Caspase-12 gene and were extremely resistant to infection. The researchers also concluded that estrogen produced by female mice blocked the expression of the human Caspase-12 gene. They were also able to pin point the precise location where estrogen binds to the gene in order to block its activity. Since the experiments were conducted using a human gene, the researchers are quite confident that the study’s results are applicable to the human population. It is believed that women have evolved a more efficient immune system because of their significant role in the reproduction process. This research could lead to new ways to reinforce the human immune system using genetic manipulation. This does raise the question of whether men will be susceptible to the idea of treatment using female hormones.
